Built in 1892, the Dome Building serves as a major architectural feature of Chattanooga’s downtown skyline. Poised on the corner of Georgia Avenue and East Eighth Street, the 65,000 square foot historic building was originally known as the Ochs Building, but most often referred to as the Times Building. Adolph Ochs, the edifice namesake and owner of The Chattanooga Times, became one of Chattanooga’s greatest boosters. At the time of construction, the Dome Building was the city’s tallest structure with a gilded, copper cupola directly above the six-story turret on the southwest corner. Designed by New York architects Theodore DeLemos and A.W. Cordes, the building’s western and southern sides are of the Italian Renaissance Revival style, while the two backsides are solid brick. The west and south sides also incorporate stone arches, Doric columns, and elaborate stone cornices.
The Dome Building Press Annex, a three-story structure on the back side of the original building, was constructed in 1917 by Ochs. It served as the location of the printing operations for the newspaper until the late 1940’s. Home at one time to the Chattanooga Times, North American Royalties, and many other noteworthy tenants, the interior was completely renovated in 2004 by its owner Dome Building Realty Partners, LLC. The exterior has also been restored to its historic appearance.
On February 15, 1979, the United States Department of the Interior placed the building on its National Register of Historic Places. The recognition was due to the importance of Adolph Ochs’ work in Chattanooga, the success of the The Chattanooga Times, and the significance of Ochs using his business sense developed here to purchase a failing New York Times and successfully making it the most highly circulated paper in the United States. Due to efforts by current owners, Urban Story Ventures, The Dome Building is Energy Star rated.
